Caring for the needs of premature babies requires a state-of-the-art facility with professionals highly trained in newborn or neonatal issues. The St. Alexius Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides the highest level of care for babies in the state of Illinois and is one of only a handful of units with this specialty in the country. An important part of this care is pharmacy services. The services that St. Alexius Medical Center NICU provides include:

• Access to a specially trained NICU-registered pharmacist
• Medication education and coaching for both parents and staff members 
• Support in making the transition from hospital to home, including coaching parents on how to administer drug to babies and monitor drug use
• Guidance on how to meet a baby's needs for total parenteral nutrition 
• Advice on the best strategies for delivering drugs to newborns
