Tests, Treatments, and Therapies at the Alexian Anticoagulation Clinic
On your first visit to the Anticoagulation Clinic you'll sit down with a certified pharmacist for a comprehensive, one-hour review of medications, food, and lifestyle habits. You'll learn how to evaluate bleeding and bruising, as well as how to spot the signs and symptoms of clotting.
Your Alexian anticoagulation pharmacist uses a simple, finger stick test to learn how fast your blood is clotting and can adjust your dose, if necessary. At first, you may need to have a blood test every few days. Later, you may need only one blood test per month, or perhaps once every two weeks. The pharmacist will advise you on how often you need to come in for an appointment.
Once you complete your blood test, the Anticoagulation Clinic will fax your physician a report of the results, including your test levels, current warfarin dose and future appointments.
You can be taught to conduct your own blood test, but only a healthcare professional, such as a certified pharmacist or a physician, can change your warfarin dose.
- Medicare/Medicaid or private insurance will typically pay for all or most of the charges. Alexian offers direct billing to Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance plans.
To begin the process, ask your physician to call the Alexian Anticoagulation Clinic. Once your physician submits the form to the Anticoagulation Clinic, clinic staff will telephone you and arrange for a first appointment.
