Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at St. Alexius Medical Center is a state designated Level III
facility that combines advanced technology and treatments with expert care for
critically ill babies. We understand that having a baby
prematurely or requiring specialized care can be overwhelming and
unexpected. Our NICU staff is committed to providing you and your baby with a
family-centered compassionate approach to comprehensive highly specialized
medical and surgical care.
Our Philosophy in Partnering with Families
Our NICU believes that partnering with families in the care
of their baby is essential for better outcomes. As partners, we want to
create an environment that promotes parent participation in care giving and
decision-making. Because of our commitment to your role as a parent
in providing safe, quality care, you are welcome to be with your baby 24 hours
a day. We encourage your presence during daily medical team rounds and
nurse shift change so you are able to hear the latest updates and participate
in your baby’s plan of care. For babies with long stays in the NICU, Care
Conferences are held to review your baby’s progress and plans for going
home. Care Conferences include members of the NICU team and anyone you
wish to attend, typically someone who will be helping you care for your
baby. We respect your role as a parent and our goal is to help you and
your baby every step of the way and prepare for the journey home.
NICU Follow-up Clinic
The NICU Follow-up Clinic is available for babies who need
developmental follow-up after going home from the NICU. Our team includes
a neonatologist, occupational and speech therapists and a developmental
therapist to assess your babies growth and development. Referrals for additional
services, such as nutritional counseling, pulmonology and community services
are also available for you and your baby. Contact us at 847-490-4222.
