Talking with Your Child About Their Hospital Visit

Going to the hospital can be frightening and overwhelming for a child.  However, the more a child knows about what to expect, the more comfortable he or she will be.  Be honest, and use simple words to explain why they are going to the hospital.  Let your child know that you will be with them and can spend the night with them.

Child Reactions

Children’s reactions to being in the hospital vary by age and development.

Ages 0-3 years old

  • Young children will not understand much about their illness or the hospital
  • They will be more concerned about being away from you
  • Stay with your child as much as you can or arrange for family members to take turns, this will help your child feel more secure
  • Provide comfort and normal routines as much as possible, such as eating and playing
  • Bring comfort items from home

Ages 3-6 years old

  • Children view going to the hospital as punishment for misbehaving
  • Think procedures will damage their bodies
  • Use honest and simple explanations
  • Encourage children to play, express feelings through play
  • Bring comfort items from home
  • Encourage your child to cope during procedures or when they are stressed)for example, deep breathing)

Ages 7-12 years old

  • Older children worry about painful procedures and losing control
  • Be open with your child about what is going on
  • Use honest and simple explanations
  • Bring comfort items from home
  • Be honest with your child
  • Encourage your child to cope during procedures or when they are stressed (for example, deep breathing)

Teenagers

  • Teenagers don’t always like to ask questions, encourage them to ask about what is going on
  • Encourage teenagers to be involved in their care, this helps them feel more in control
  • Encourage journaling to express fears
  • Encourage your child to cope during procedures or when they are stressed (for example, deep breathing)
