Neurospecialists for a child’s critical development period

Alexian Brothers Neurosciences Institute has attracted leading pediatric neuropsychologists with expertise in how learning and behavior are associated with the development of brain structures and systems. These professionals specialize in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment planning for children between the ages of 18 months to 18 years of age with cognitive impairment. A neuropsychological evaluation is not the same as a school assessment, which generally focuses only on achievement and skills needed for academic success. Generally, school assessments are not able to diagnose learning or behavior disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) caused by altered brain function or development. Problems can vary from learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD or Autism, to psychiatric disorders such as depression, to medical disorders such as brain tumors and traumatic brain injuries where neurosurgical intervention may be required.

Evaluations designed to diagnose a wide range of disorders

A neuropsychological evaluation helps to better understand a child’s functioning in areas such as memory, attention, perception, coordination, language and personality. Additionally neuropsychology is a critical piece of epilepsy patient diagnosis and treatment. Evaluations help identify the effect of seizures on cognitive functioning and assist in determining if the seizures are associated with another neurological or medical condition.
