A clinical neuropsychologist is a professional within the field of psychology with expertise in the applied science of brain-behavior relationships. The clinical neuropsychologist uses psychological, neurological, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological principles, techniques, and tests to evaluate patients’ neurocognitive, behavioral, and emotional strengths/weaknesses and their relationships to normal and abnormal central nervous system functioning. This is a unique distinction from other professionals who may administer some of the same tests but do not have the expertise to interpret the results as precisely as a fellowship-trained, experienced neuropsychologist. It is not enough to know that a problem exists; it is critical to know why the problem exists in order to create an effective treatment plan.
