Neurosurgery at Alexian Neurosciences Institute
Our Tests, Treatments, and Therapies
How do I schedule an appointment?
Outpatient appointments can be scheduled by calling the Alexian Neurosciences Institute office Monday through Friday at 847-981-3630.
How do I prepare for surgery?
Once your surgery is scheduled, your doctor will order a pre-operative work-up. This will include a history and a physical exam. Depending on your needs and the surgical procedure you will undergo, an EKG to monitor your heart health, blood work, and a chest X-ray may be ordered.
Prior to your surgery
The week before your surgery it is important for you to stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and herbal supplements to decrease the chance of bleeding.
24 hours prior to our surgery
Do not eat or drink the night before surgery. If you need to take any daily medication, have only a small sip of water with it. If you feel ill the day or morning of your scheduled surgery, please call us immediately. Also, remove nail polish from your fingernails. Nail polish prevents us from seeing the color beneath your nails which helps us make sure you are getting enough oxygen.
On the day of your surgery, wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Do not wear jewelry. Remember to bring your eyeglasses and any toiletries you may need such as a denture case or a contact lens case. You will need to bring a photo ID or driver's license with you for identity verification.
What happens on the day of my surgery?
After you arrive, you will meet with the anesthesiologist and neurosurgeon to discuss any questions that might have arisen since your last visit. When it is time for you to go into the operating room, your family will go into the waiting room. Once you are out of surgery, you will go into the recovery room for at least and hour and the neurosurgeon will update your family members.
What happens after my surgery is completed?
After your surgery is completed, the neurosurgeon will determine the level of post-operative care needed. It is common for patients who have undergone neurosurgery to spend the first post-operative day in the Intensive Care Unit. As you improve, nurses will tailor a care plan to meet your specific needs and help you plan for your discharge. Your neurosurgeon and treatment team will determine your discharge date and provide you with instructions regarding your follow-up care. It is important for you call to schedule your post-operative follow-up appointment after discharge.
