Alexian Brothers Hospice Patient Eligibility
Patients are eligible for hospice services once the physician assesses that the terminal illness can no longer be cured, or the patient and family decide that they no longer wish to pursue aggressive treatment. A common misconception is that the patient has to be close to death in order to receive hospice services. In reality, a patient can be admitted to hospice services when the physician projects life expectancy to be six months or less.
Patients and families benefit most from hospice services that are in place before the patient begins significant decline. Patients and family members have the opportunity to become comfortable with the team members, symptom management is better controlled, and psychosocial and spiritual issues can be addressed in a calm, productive way.
Hospice services are covered fully by Medicare and Medicaid, and at least partially by private insurers. We work with private insurers to provide coverage for patients with private insurance. Continuing with the core values of Alexian Brothers Health System to serve the poor, our services are available to persons without a payer source. Our team will work with you to clarify financial issues, and assist in applying for assistance, when needed.
