Wolf Mini-maze Candidate Information at Alexian Cardiovascular Institute
Patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AF) are not automatically candidates for the Wolf Mini-maze. In order to have the Wolf Mini-maze procedure patients must conform to a certain criteria:
- Symptomatic drug refractory AF
- No contraindications to surgery
- Can be ventilated with single lung ventilation
Inclusion Criteria
- Male or female patients between 18 and 80 years of age with drug refractory symptomatic AF
- Patients may have paroxysmal persistent or permanent AF
- BMI < 32
- Left atrial size < 6.0 cm
- Lack of cardiac thrombus (LA, LAA)
- Able to tolerate single lung ventilation
- Intolerant of or not willing to take blood thinners
Once a patient qualifies for the Mini-maze procedure, like other surgical procedures, they must be on a set protocol including blood thinners 3 to 4 weeks prior to surgery, have an echocardiogram and/or other noninvasive heart tests and meet with an electrophysiologist.
