Clinical Excellence in Low Vision Evaluation and Management
The Alexian Brothers Outpatient Rehabilitation Services, in partnership with the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, provide Low Vision Management services that offer convenient access to the same expert care that has earned RIC the ranking of "Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America" by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991.
Improved Quality of Life
Our Occupational Therapists provide state of the art treatment resulting in immediate and long term benefits. The purpose of this program is to maximize the use of existing vision. Clients will benefit from a comprehensive evaluation in a supportive outpatient environment with convenient access to uniquely individualized services that may include any or all of the following:
- Evaluation
- The Occupational Therapist explains the role of the program, identifies the client's goals and develops a treatment plan. The plan and goals are derived from information gained through client interview as well as from functional eye assessment tools including the MN Read and the Pepper Test.
- The Occupational Therapist also determines any other deficits that may impact learning or impair use of low vision adaptive equipment.
- The treatment plan is sent to the ordering physician for approval and facilitates communication.
- Treatment - instruction & training, based on the client goals and plan, may include the following:
- Activities of Daily Living including both self-care and homemaking task
- Lighting and contrast
- Adaptive techniques
- Adaptive equipment
- Use of hand held magnifiers for reading
- Eccentric Viewing
- Home modification for improved functional use
- Introduction to use of CCTV or Zoomtext for the computer
- Driving Evaluation
- Community Resources including Support Groups
- "LIFE Center" - a Patient/Family Resource and Education Center

Easy Referral Process
- Fast and easy referral process.
- A prescription from a physician is required. The prescription should state, "Occupational Therapy for Low Vision Rehabilitation".
- A copy of the patient's latest eye exam is recommended to facilitate communication.
- Visits are billed as Outpatient Occupational Therapy. They are covered by Medicare and any insurance plan that covers outpatient therapy.
- Clients are scheduled for one hour sessions once a week. This allows them time to practice learned techniques and to practice with loaned equipment.
- Treatment length can vary from one to six visits depending on the client's needs.
- Appointment availability accommodates your client's schedule, usually within one week of the referral.
- The program is highly adaptable to meet the needs of each client.
- Regular communication keeps the doctor involved in the client's progress.
