Tom Thompson Award 2010
Tom Thompson Award Winner Steven Russell
By Stacey Watson, Disabilities Counselor
Harper College
When we were asked to nominate students for the Tom Thompson Awards, I thought about who is really hard working and deserving of this award and Steven Russell came to my mind. I met Steven last year when Alexian Brothers for Mental Health teamed up with Harper for Business. Harper for Business provides companies wanting to bring Harper classes and curriculum to their business campus. Alexian's goal was to provide a bridge for clients who wanted to return to school, but wanted a class in a comfortable setting. This could help lead the way for students to return to the Harper Campus. I taught Orientation 101 when I first met Steven at Alexian Brothers. Right away I knew the potential he had for success. Steven is a transfer student from Northwestern University and is now taking perquisites for the cardiac tech program here at Harper. Currently, Steven has a 3.53 GPA, has applied to the Cardiac Tech program, and scored a 98% on his National Nursing exams. Steven is a hardworking individual who has overcome many obstacles and is looking for a successful future. I am proud to nominate, Steven Russell.
