Alexian Brothers Medical Center Volunteer Program

About Us

Alexian Brothers Medical Center Volunteer Program plays a critical role in assisting and supporting various departments within the Medical Center.  Every day, up to 60 volunteers staff more than 65 high-profile departments of the hospital.

Volunteers must be willing to dedicate three to four hours at least one day a week and choose from the following three shifts: 8 a.m.-12 p.m., 12 p.m.-4 p.m. or 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. Volunteers born after 1950 are required to have a positive Rubeola German Measles immunity test and a positive Rubella (Measles) test. All volunteers must have a current TB test taken prior to volunteer service.

We are looking for volunteers in these areas:

  • Customer service/guest relations: information desk, greeters, wait areas, mailroom, gift shop, and many more.
  • Clerical/office support: copying, filing, mailing, and assisting with special projects.
  • Patient/nursing staff: assist patients in wheelchairs, help nursing staff deliver water and meal trays to patients, and stock supplies and linens.
  • Ladies Workshop: a Wednesday gathering to craft baby hats, Afghans, puppets and dolls for the women, infant, pediatrics, and emergency room units.

To get started, you must:

  • Complete and submit this online form 
  • Attend an interview
  • Undergo a criminal background check if you are 18 years or older
  • Attend a volunteer orientation
  • Attend departmental orientation, if applicable
  • Purchase a volunteer uniform for nominal fee

Our Volunteers at Alexian Brothers Medical Center Volunteer Program: A talented and generous group of over 400 men, women and students volunteer at Alexian Brothers Medical Center each year and make a difference in the lives of our patients, their friends and families, and our staff.

Why Choose

All volunteers receive a food voucher for use in the cafeteria, free parking and flu shots, invitations to special hospital events, and are acknowledged at volunteer recognition events.

  • Alexian Brothers Medical Center  offers a 40-hour, full-semester Student Program. Volunteer hours are applied toward graduation requirement for seniors in high school.

  • High school and college students can gain exposure to the health care profession before committing to a college major or career path by shadowing nurses and physicians in various disciplines, including cardiology, obstetrics, family practice, and internal medicine. A three month minimum volunteer commitment is needed prior to participating in the nurse or physician shadowing.
  • Older adults find volunteering a great way to stay active and feel as though they are making a meaningful contribution to other peoples' lives.
