Center for Eating Disorders
Clinical Outcomes

The Eating Disorders Program at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital is committed to providing our patients with the most effective treatments available.
As part of our commitment to quality and effectiveness, our Center for Evidence-Based Practice evaluates the outcomes of our treatments to determine if patients have improved. We use a variety of outcome measures to assess improvement in each of the following areas:
-
Symptoms
Have the symptoms that brought the patient into the hospital improved from admission to discharge? We look at a patient’s eating disordered thinking, as well as their overall severity of symptoms. We also look at the severity of a patient’s depression, anxiety, stress, and emotional regulation.
-
Quality of Life
Has the patient’s sense of enjoyment and satisfaction with their life improved from admission to discharge? We look at a patient’s enjoyment and satisfaction with their family and friends, physical health, and housing.
-
Impairment
Has the patient’s functioning with their family, work or school, or interpersonal relationships improved? We look at how a patient’s functioning at school or work, with friends and family, or at home are impaired by her or his symptoms.

Because we provide emergency and acute-care treatment, we do not expect our patients to achieve full remission of their eating disorders during our high-intensity yet short-term treatment. Indeed, with an average of 15 days of inpatient treatment and/or 20 days of partial hospitalization (PHP) or intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment, our goal is to provide stabilization and to get patients started on the process of recovery. While we do not claim cures, we hold ourselves to a high standard of treatment outcomes for patients with eating disorders.
To evaluate if we meet these high standards for our treatment outcomes, we conduct several analyses on patients with data at both admission and discharge. For example, the vast majority (83%) of our patients with eating disorders do not return to our facility for treatment within 1 year of being discharged.
