Alexian Brothers Hospital Network Continuing Medical Education Mission Statement

The following mission statement governs the Alexian Brothers Hospital Network CME Consortium. It has received a commendation from the Illinois State Medical Society for its completeness.

Purpose

The CME mission for the Alexian Brothers Hospital Network Consortium is to provide continuing medical education of the highest quality to physicians throughout the entire network in order to continually improve their knowledge, skills, and professional competency for better patient care and end results. The Consortium hospitals (Alexian Brothers Medical Center, St. Alexius Medical Center, Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital and Neurosciences Institute, and Alexian Brothers Rehabilitation Hospital) have a central CME Consortium Committee with representation from all four hospitals.

The two comprehensive hospitals, Alexian Brothers Medical Center and St. Alexius Medical Center, have CME subcommittees reporting to the CME Consortium Committee. The ABMC CME Committee and the SAMC CME Committee function to ensure that the unique needs at each participating hospital are met in a timely manner. The CME Consortium Committee advises in program planning and development and oversees the activities of all four hospitals to assure full compliance with the Essentials for Accreditation established by the Illinois State Medical Society.

Content Areas

Striving for the highest standard of care and efficient and innovative use of resources, the ABHN CME Consortium will offer timely, relevant, important educational activities on an organized, ongoing basis. With the establishment of several clinical centers of excellence within ABHN, the CME activities will include information with regard to new and innovative means of diagnosis and therapy, particularly in Oncology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Respiratory Health, Older Adult Care, Neurosciences, Pulmonary Care, Behavioral Health, and Complementary/Alternative Medicine. Additionally, these activities will also include aspects of medical practice related to the six categories of core competencies identified by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The specific activities will be based on needs identification by various sources. Upon request, physicians will also be provided with information and assistance related to their Maintenance of Certification Programs as mandated by the ABMS.

Target Audience

The target audience will include the physicians of all four hospitals as well as those practicing in the Northwest suburbs and Chicago area. In addition, these CME activities will encourage non-physician healthcare professionals who work closely with physicians (e.g. technicians, nurses, etc.) to attend.

Type of Activities

The activities and services of the program include various formats appropriately designed for the learning needs such as lecture courses for didactic learning, multi-hour conferences, Tumor Board for oncology consultative forum, group discussions, interdisciplinary conferences, and hands-on skill training, including demonstration and return demonstrations for CPR.

Expected Results

The expected results of CME activities include the improvement of patient care, the enhancement of physician performance, and the development of physician leadership skills. The improvement in quality of care will be measured by outcome analysis linked to core measures and conducted by quality review processes and by the adoption of new skills, technologies, and devices, including their effective and appropriate use.
