In 2005, both St. Alexius Medical Center and Alexian Brothers Medical Center received initial certification from The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. This means that they met the most stringent care standards for stroke, and they continue do so. To maintain Primary Stroke Center certification, both Centers must undergo a recertification process every 2 years. Both hospitals were among the first hospitals in the United States to be certified and among the first seven hospitals in Illinois.
In January of 2013, Alexian Brothers Medical Center became the first Comprehensive Stroke Center certified by the Join Commission in the Chicagoland area. This means Alexian Brothers Medical Center joins an elite group of providers focused on complex stroke care. Comprehensive Stroke Centers are recognized as industry leaders and are responsible for setting the national agenda in highly-specialized stroke care.
The Joint Commission awarded Alexian Rehabilitation Hospital Disease-Specific Care Certification for Stroke Rehabilitation, making it one of few in the state with this distinction.
By recognizing select medical facilities for their advanced stroke care, The Joint Commission designation helps the public identify which hospitals are committed to excellence in stroke care.
