Support Services

The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers Health System serves as a resource center for all oncology patients, their families and the community. Our goal is to empower and support you.

We can help you:

  • Access information to help you understand your diagnosis and treatments
  • Cope with your diagnosis of cancer and the many emotions you may be experiencing
  • Consider decisions about treatment options as you think about your work, family and lifestyle
  • Understand social security and disability benefits and insurance coverages
  • Apply for programs that offer financial assistance

The Cancer Institute is available to you Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm or by appointment.

The Cancer Institute Boutique is available to our patients by appointment. We offer sensitive, private consultations to discuss options for hair replacement, post-surgical garments and prosthesis.  We  hope our products and expertise will make this challenging time easier for you.  Please contact our social worker at 847-755-8626 for more information. The boutique is open by appointment only and is located on both our Alexian Brothers and St Alexius campuses.

Education and Support:

Programs are offered to provide knowledge for a better understanding and support for coping.  Programs are also available for relaxation and to feel better, including massage therapy, Energy therapy, Healing Touch, fitness/exercise (yoga, aerobics, Tai Chi), hypnotherapy, and stress, social and lifestyle management.

A variety of information is available to our patients in the Cancer Institute Library located on both our Alexian Brothers and St Alexius campuses.  It includes books, pamphlets and brochures, videos and  cancer education computers. Patients are able to obtain the latest cancer information through access to the Internet and other software programs. Ask at our front desks and someone will be happy to assist you.

Volunteers help with community referrals, answer individual questions regarding cancer and supervise the library. The library is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm.

Nutrition plays an important role in cancer treatment, recovery and throughout survivorship. Proper nourishment can help you cope with side effects more effectively and heal more quickly. It is essential to building and repairing body tissues and reducing the risk of infection. Furthermore, good nutrition provides energy and improves overall health. Our dietitian (Certified Specialist in Oncology) is available to meet with you and your family/caregivers to provide a nutrition assessment, discuss your specific dietary needs and provide follow up as needed. This consultation may include the suggestion of foods to eat and avoid while managing treatment side effects as well as ways to enhance the immune system. A discussion of healthy dietary choices post treatment and strategies to achieve and maintain appropriate weight may also be included. Feel free to contact our dietitian at 847-755-8603.

Oncology Social Worker:

A social worker is available to all our patients to provide counseling and other services to manage stress for you and your family through all phases of your cancer.  Please contact our social worker at 847-437-5500 Ext 5904 for  more information.

Pastoral care services are available to all our patients and their families. A chaplain is available to meet with your and your family.  A chapel is located within the Cancer Institute and may be used as a quiet reflection space or for services. There is also a larger chapel located in the hospital where one can attend mass Monday through Friday at 11:30am.
