I am Healthy and Enjoying Life

By Jack L.

In the Fall of 2008 during a physical exam with my primary doctor, my PSA was elevated. He said this could be caused by an infection so he put me on antibiotics for one month and had me tested again. This time my PSA was even higher. He then referred me to an urologist for a biopsy. Several weeks later I received a call from the urologist telling me I had prostate cancer and I needed to schedule an appointment with him. He didn’t tell me how serious the cancer was so this was a scary time for me. When I called for an appointment I was told I had to first schedule a pelvic scan and a bone scan. Once these tests were completed I went back to my urologist and he told me the cancer had not spread beyond my prostate and that I had two cancer spots, one rated a 6 and the other a 7. This was an aggressive cancer that had to be dealt with. He listed all the treatment options and their corresponding survival rates. The two highest rates were surgery and radiation seed implant both at 92%. I was feeling pretty good at this point and chose the seed implant. The urologist laughed and said he did this procedure but not a hospital approved by my insurance, so I would have to find another urologist. I went back to my primary doctor and he sent me to an urologist group. Once I saw the doctor there, he shared that he does not do seed implants, so on to another new doctor. With my new doctor I was referred to a radiation oncologist at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. He would determine the number of seeds, the strength of radiation and the placement of the seeds. Finally, I was ready for my radiation seed implant in May 2009.

The procedure went well but for the next two weeks I had urinary problems, but all was fine. It has been 3 years since my procedure and my PSA tests have remained low and I am healthy. Other than the frightful call, the rest of the time was more of an aggravation with appointment, procedures, tests and getting referrals. Thus for 8 months I wasn’t able to go anywhere, my wife and I love to travel, so that was not fun, but now I am healthy and enjoying life.
