Cancer Saved My Life
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, my heart told me not to be afraid, that this was going to turn out fine, so I was not afraid. I had always thought of myself as a healthy person. But cancer made me rethink some of my notions about health, how I view myself, my own health history and my possible health future. This is all still a work in process, but I believe that the blessings I had in the past and continue to have today are really greater than even I had realized. I knew I was lucky to have had the health I had, just as I am fortunate now to see that for everything that happened to me while I was in treatment, I was and still am so much better off than so many others.
It is said that there are gifts and lessons all around us if we can just see them. Cancer saved my life because through my cancer adventure, it was discovered that I have a heart condition, requiring immediate treatment. But more than that, my lessons included how to be patient, how to ask for and accept help from others, and how not to be afraid. While I have long made my attitude gratitude, I see now that I have so much more to be grateful for in my life than ever before. Today, I worry less, enjoy more, and love myself and others more. Having cancer and going through my illness, treatment and recovery has taught me not to worry about small things, to live and let live, to let go and let God. Each day, I am reminded that the miracle is already here. It is possible for me to say today, thank you, God, for my illness.
