A SURVIVOR’S STORY
By Scott G.
It was not supposed to turn out this way. I was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 1988. Every study on my type of cancer had a 60-month 5 year life expectancy. Being given the diagnosis of cancer alone was devastating. The resulting chemotherapy, radiation and surgery (a total of six surgeries) takes a tremendous toll on the body, mind and spirit. A complicating factor was daily seizures as the tumor had infiltrated my motor strip.
It can be empowering for people diagnosed with cancer to be able to do something positive while going through this challenging time. My choice was the Taoist Internal Healing Arts, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong. These arts are based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which can strengthen the flow of Qi or Chi in the body. As the Qi builds over time, it unlocks stuck or stagnant Qi returning the body to health and balance.
While not a panacea, I have survived despite the epilepsy and the slowly growing tumor. One physician researcher called me “statistically insignificant” for having survived fifteen years in 2003. While enduring another surgery that year, some unexplainable things happened. Since then I have been seizure and cancer free. There is no medical explanation for this outcome. I realize I have been blessed by a second chance at life. Since 2004 I have dedicated myself to teaching these Taoist Internal Healing Arts and have helped others deal with chronic health conditions. I am now a 25-year survivor and going strong.
