Health & Wellness Resources
Health is a state of physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual wellness. Health and wellness can be obtained by living in harmony with yourself and other people, and with your social and physical environment. A person can foster their own health and well being by taking responsibility for avoiding harmful behaviors, limiting exposure to health risks and undertaking health behaviors and practices. Health and wellness not only takes into account the condition of your body, but your state of mind. Your mental processes are the most important influences on your health because they determine how you deal with your physical and social surroundings, what attitudes you have about life and how you interact with others.
At Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health, we educate our clients on how the mind and body function—how to make informed decisions about health care how to be responsible for their actions and behaviors and how social and economic forces affect their ability to lead a healthy life. We wish our clients optimal health, happiness, recovery and a full and satisfying life in the community via access to a range of effective services, supports and resources.
For the past five years, the Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health’s Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program curriculum has been expanded to provide greater emphasis on preventing or coping with co-morbid health problems such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease. The interventions include daily individual and group exercise (walking, aerobic games and yoga), weight monitoring, guided meditation, stress reduction techniques, education on healthy food choices and portion control, education on managing diseases and role playing effective communication with medical staff. Additionally, once a week a psychiatrist meets with our clients to answer medication or disease related questions in an informal and open setting.
