National Breast Cancer Foundation Grant Sustains Hospital's Mission
NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION GRANT SUSTAINS HOSPITAL’S MISSION
(Hoffman Estates, IL) - For the twelfth consecutive year the Breast Care Center at St. Alexius Medical Center will be able to provide mammograms and breast ultrasounds at no cost to hundreds of uninsured and underinsured women thanks to a $25,000 grant from the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
To date the National Breast Cancer Foundation has given the Breast Care Center nearly $750,000, which has funded outreach and breast cancer screening services for more than 6,500 women, a majority of whom would not have had access to crucial tests and screenings. Since 2002, many of those who received screenings through the community program were later referred for further diagnosis and receive care for various stages of breast cancer that otherwise may have gone undetected.
“Through this generous grant, we are able to provide this life-saving early detection exam for women in our community,” said Jacqueline Lamb, supervisor for the St. Alexius Breast Care Center. “We are so thankful to be stewards of this gift.”
About one in eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetimes, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Screening exams, such as mammograms, can help detect breast cancers early, which can lead to earlier treatment and better outcomes. NCI recommends that women age 40 and older have a screening mammogram once every year or two.
Despite those recommendations and the need for services, Lamb said, many women skip their breast health screenings due to economic hardship or lack of health insurance coverage. She added that she had a list of women without insurance who were looking for financial assistance for their annual mammogram. Thanks to the ongoing grant support from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Lamb said she has already begun following up and scheduling appointments with them.
